Why All the Worry? Smile! Actually Laugh!

Lets look at Japanese Comedy

If you've every watched any anime at any point of your life, you've probably have seen this sub-genre at some point because it is very easy to fit into a story and Mangakas (Authors) tend to like to use it in the beginning of a series or later as comic relief.
But the point here is series that are prominently based on making you laugh more so than anything. I'll define how this is done as well as traditional comedy and stuff that is done now to evoke some laughter in a certain audiences.
With that, let's review the sacred tome of the Otaku God.
Breast Claw fights with hands from her pectorals
Now there is no real good way to go about this so let's just start with this; have you ever watched some comedy skit from across the sea or where ever and wondered just what the hell? Or maybe seen something off the BBC and just scowled from confusion? THAT's how this is gonna appear at first but just bear with me.
Some of this stuff is just weird, poorly planned out, or just doesn't translated well into English. So my advice is just roll with it, usually its more funny after understanding the bits and routines.
Most series that are actually focused on comedy do so based off a thing called Manzai. This is comedy styled based off two people.

  •   Boke -- the funny man usually is ridiculous, obnoxious, or generally just the set up for the jokes. Very easy to point out in series.
  •   Tsukkomi -- The straight man, is serious and tries to keep sanity but will always play into the jokes of the Boke.

Let's move onto a series that shows a good example of this taking place-- D-Frag!
The main character is a Tsukkomi who (my opinion) is falling in love with a bunch of Boke club girls. Poor guy! He usually ends up retorting about their nonsense and then wonders why he always has such a hard time. (Click here to read)
But he's not the only one on this list that likes the abuse!
"I'm just so peeved that I didn't get to lick the Vice President's boot..."  -Andre, Prison Highschool
Let's move on to something a bit more adult, taking plenty of fan shots and giving situations that just make you feel awkward let alone these poor five guys.
I'm talking about Prison Highschool (Click here to Read!) a series about five boys in an all women's highschool, feeling the vigor of youth. Well all seems perfect as five strange boys gather together to sneak a peek in the girl's locker room. But of course based off of what can only be bad luck they get caught and are forced into a prison erected in the courtyard!
This is more of a series if you have crude humor or like dirty jokes, it's not gonna be lovey dovey, instead it'll be more like a awkward stick shoved straight up your ass but will make you laugh almost constantly, good anime too. Check it out!
Next series is a little bit of adult and Manzai, it's Everyday Life with Monster Girls (Click here to read!)
Following the story of how all mythological creatures exist and are now regular members of society, follow the story of one man as he gets more and more roommates that make most lonely men jealous...
That is, until you watch him get accidentally crushed, beaten, broken, and almost killed by his beauteous girls around him.
Ultimately what saves him is his kind and accepting heart, forgiving attitudes, as well as treating everyone equally. It's got times where the characters are sweet and funny and times where the adult side gets out. Either way, funny as hell to read and watch as an anime. Give it a shot!
I'll come back later to tell you just about one series that fits into this sub-genre nicely. Soon to come, One-punch Man! Check the tabs at the top to get links to explore more of this sub-genre or check out more posts on here to explore more into the cult of the Otaku God!
